Cheswold is a town rich in history, dating back to 1856, coming into existence (like other nearby towns) with the start of the Delaware Railroad.
At its founding, the town was a mix of Lenni Lenape, Dutch (referred to back then as Moors), Scottish immigrants and African-American slaves. In 1860, you would have been able to locate only 35 homes, 3 general stores, a brickyard, a wheelwright, and a grain warehouse.
Cheswold was home to Leipsic Railroad Station, named after the nearby town, Leipsic. It was an important shipping point of entry for the large quantities of grain and fruit being grown in the surrounding countryside. The Station's name was later changed to Moorton, after John S. Moor who owned most of the land.
The name Cheswold was selected after a contest begun in 1888 to rename the town. The name was derived from the word “chess” (but dropping one s) after a large group of Chestnut trees near the train depot and “wold” meaning forest or trees. Thus, the name Cheswold!
